MAYOR JOE HOGSETT ANNOUNCES NEIGHBORHOOD
OF THE MONTH FOR JANUARY
University Heights to be highlighted
INDIANAPOLIS – Mayor Joe Hogsett announced this week that University Heights will be the City’s ‘Neighborhood of the Month’ for January, 2018. The Neighborhood of the Month initiative showcases the unique culture, history, and neighborhood groups that make Indianapolis special.
University Heights was established in 1902 when real estate developer William L. Elder offered eight acres of land to the Church of United Brethren in Christ to help establish a college. To this day, the community remains a home for students and residents alike, who all care for the area with organized efforts led by the University Heights Neighborhood Association.
“From organizing a neighborhood association, to partnering with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, the University Heights neighborhood has thrived on our south side for many decades thanks to a true sense of community pride,” said Mayor Hogsett. “As we continue to uplift all neighborhoods, we recognize that one of the keys to our city’s success is education – and here in Indianapolis, that is epitomized in the University Heights neighborhood, as academics continually fuel their quality of life.”
University Heights, located on the south side of Indianapolis, is being highlighted this month as students return for another semester at the school that created the neighborhood: University of Indianapolis. Chartered in 1902 as Indiana Central University, the school adopted its current moniker in 1986, and now serves an average student population of close to 7,000 undergraduates and postgraduates.
“The south side of Indianapolis is revitalizing itself, and it is committed groups such as the University Heights Neighborhood Association who are making such encouraging change possible,” said City-County Councillor John Wesseler. “The crown jewel of that neighborhood is of course the University of Indianapolis, and with even more improvements coming to the area in the next few years, we look forward to University Heights and the entire south side being enjoyed by more and more people down the road.”
Residents and visitors are encouraged to use the hashtag #IndyNoM when posting on social media about University Heights during the month of January. To nominate your neighborhood for Neighborhood of the Month visit: http://indy.gov/NoM.
